These Japanese inspired savoury pancakes are a bit spicy, and surprisingly addictive. 

Cabbage doing the Lord’s work. This is a soft entry into Japanese flavours for the flexis, the fridge-foragers and the ‘I can’t be arsed with takeaway’ crowd.

    Worth the Catch 🐟🍋 This salad doesn’t insist on b Worth the Catch 🐟🍋

This salad doesn’t insist on being eaten immediately, although of course I would never judge if you did. Just warm, it’s generous. Left to cool, the flavours just get better! 

And the next day, straight from the fridge, it becomes firmer, brighter and somehow even more delicious. The feta softens, the courgettes stay sweet, and the salmon flakes obligingly into the orzo without turning the whole thing into mush.

There’s lemon, tons of herbs and enough olive oil to keep the grains glossy rather than claggy. I like it for lunch, though I’ve been known to take a fork to it at breakfast with no regret at all.

Lovely to make, lovelier to return to!

Weekend brunch got a bit extra last weekend! Soft eggs baked inside tiger rolls with spinach, feta and dukkah. Crisp edges, salty cheese, yolk running into the bread, all the good stuff. Feels a bit naughty, but then there’s spinach and lemon involved so we’re firmly in the “balanced” camp.For those who detest runny and soft yolks, I did some with scrambled eggs too. Still equally as delicious. 

10/10 would make again.

When the weather is like this, it never really calls for light, dutiful salad; it calls for a big, steady bowl that understands you – my Oven-On, World-Off Pearl Barley Stew. It goes into the oven looking perfectly sensible and comes out with soft edges and deep, savoury warmth: smoky sausages, sweet carrot rounds with beans and greens tucked into every spoonful.

Once everything’s browned and bundled into the pot, the oven simply gets on with it while you do very little indeed. The pearl barley turns plump and soothing, the stock reduces into something rich and cosseting, and a last-minute muddle of lemon, parsley and grated cheese makes it taste as though you’ve been tending it all evening.

This is the sort of supper you eat in your softest jumper, with the weather raging outside and you feeling quietly looked after inside. 

💾 Save it, make it on repeat, and let January feel a little more barley-and-bowl than grit-and-grind. 🤝
