For this Wolds Wine Estate review, we headed into the Nottinghamshire countryside in September for breakfast among the vines. There are plenty of places to go for breakfast around Nottingham, but considerably fewer where you can sit overlooking a working vineyard.

Set in Stanton-on-the-Wolds, the family-run English wine estate produces its own wines and cider, with views across the vines and orchard. It feels rather more like a little outing than simply popping out for eggs, which was part of the attraction.

We went along to see whether the food could live up to the surroundings. As it turns out, it very nearly did.

01 / The setting

Breakfast in the Nottinghamshire Countryside

The setting is undoubtedly a large part of the appeal. From the restaurant, the countryside is part of the experience rather than something you leave behind at the door. There's a lovely sense of having escaped the usual brunch circuit, without having travelled very far at all.

We arrived without a reservation and were very lucky to get a table. Clearly, the secret is already out. If you're planning to visit, I'd strongly recommend booking ahead. Walk-ins are possible, but I wouldn't bank on finding a table, particularly at the weekend.

Once seated, the service was excellent. Attentive, friendly and genuinely welcoming, it was exactly the sort of hospitality that makes a place feel worth returning to. A pretty setting can get people through the door; good service is what makes the visit memorable.

02 / On the table

What We Ate at Wolds Wine Estate

Breakfast menus are surprisingly revealing. There's nowhere particularly clever to hide when you're serving eggs, hollandaise or a traditional fry-up. Sometimes the simplest dishes demand the most attention.

We ordered two classics: Eggs Royale with smoked salmon and hollandaise, and a Full English. Both were good, with just one small issue that stopped mine being quite as lovely as it could have been.

The almost-perfect plate

Eggs Royale

I went for the Eggs Royale: smoked salmon, poached eggs, spinach and hollandaise on a toasted muffin. On paper, a combination that's difficult to resist.

It was a very good breakfast overall, but the spinach had made the bread beneath it rather soggy. A small thing, perhaps, yet a good Eggs Royale relies on that contrast between the toasted muffin, soft eggs and rich hollandaise. Lose the texture underneath and the dish loses a little something with it.

It certainly didn't ruin breakfast, but it was the one detail I would have changed.

Lovely flavours, although the spinach left the muffin a touch too soft.

The other order

A Proper Full English

The Full English was a good choice too. A traditional, satisfying breakfast that didn't feel the need to reinvent a classic.

Between the two plates, the verdict was straightforward: good food, a lovely setting and excellent service. It's the sort of breakfast that makes you wonder why you don't make more time for mornings like this.

A beautiful setting gets my attention. Good food and excellent service make me want to come back. Hey Lolly / Wolds Wine Estate

03 / Next time

The One I'm Going Back For

There is unfinished business with the breakfast menu.

The Fruit Pig Brunch Slice caught my eye: a Fruit Pig sausage patty, vintage cheddar, smoked streaky bacon, a Wolds hash brown and fried egg in a toasted English muffin. Not exactly a modest breakfast, but then who asked for modest?

I appreciate seeing something a little more interesting alongside the usual classics, particularly when a menu gives you a genuine reason to come back.

So, yes, I already know what I'm ordering next time. Assuming I remember to book a table.

04 / A little more to explore

More Than a Breakfast Destination

Of course, there's more to Wolds Wine Estate than its restaurant. The estate produces its own English wines and cider, with vineyard tours and tastings for anyone wanting to explore beyond the breakfast table. There's also vineyard glamping if a morning out turns into the idea of a weekend away.

For us, this visit was very much about breakfast. But I rather like a place where a meal can be the beginning of an outing, rather than the whole plan.

8/10My verdict

Would I Return?

Absolutely. This was a thoroughly enjoyable breakfast in a beautiful Nottinghamshire setting, made all the better by excellent, attentive service.

The soggy muffin beneath my Eggs Royale was the only real criticism. In the context of everything else, it's a relatively minor one, but enough to knock a little off the score.

A strong 8/10. I'd happily return, not least because that Fruit Pig Brunch Slice is still calling my name. If you're looking for somewhere different for breakfast near Nottingham, this is well worth considering. Just do yourself a favour and book.
